Timber framing is one of the most beautiful and impactful ways to transform a home's exterior. Whether it’s a grand entrance or exposed structural beams, this architectural detail can completely redefine the character of your home.

What is Timber Framing?
Timber framing is a traditional building method using heavy timbers to create structural or decorative features. Think gables, entryway trusses, posts, and exposed beams—all handcrafted from solid wood. It's both timeless and incredibly durable.
At LUMA Build Design, we specialize in creating custom timber framing features that instantly enhance curb appeal and bring a natural warmth to any space.
Why We Love Timber Framing
We love timber framing because it's where creativity truly comes to life. Every timber feature we design and build is unique. There’s something magical about seeing raw beams turn into a jaw-dropping focal point. It's craftsmanship in its purest form.
Recent Projects in Elmira & Elora
We just completed a gorgeous gable feature on a heritage stone home in Elmira. The goal was to elevate the front entrance and breathe new life into the façade. We used Douglas Fir, one of our go-to materials, known for its rich grain, strength, and long-lasting beauty. The transformation was incredible—it boosted both the aesthetic and the value of the home.
We’re also starting a new timber framing project on McNabb Street in Elora. This kind of work is what drives us—bringing fresh ideas into historic or modern homes and making them shine.

Structural & Decorative Timber Framing
Timber framing isn't just for looks. We do both decorative/exposed features and fully structural beams. Our most common timber dimensions include:
8" beams for columns and structural support
6" beams for interior or accent details
10" beams for larger, high-impact designs
These sizes help create visual dimension and architectural interest. Our materials of choice? Douglas Fir and Cedar—long-lasting, full of life, and naturally beautiful.
What Homeowners Want to Know
Most clients ask about two things:
Beam sizing: We help you choose the right scale to suit your home.
Material: We work almost exclusively with Douglas Fir and Cedar for their durability and character.
Another common question is about maintenance. The good news? There isn’t much! We use only the highest-quality stains and sealants to ensure your timber features last for decades with minimal upkeep.

Q&A: Timber Framing in Ontario Homes
What is the best wood for exterior timber framing in Southern Ontario?
Douglas Fir and Cedar are ideal. They hold up well to our climate and offer beautiful, natural finishes that last.
Is timber framing expensive compared to traditional framing?
Timber framing is typically more of an investment upfront due to material and craftsmanship, but it adds long-term value, curb appeal, and durability that standard framing cannot.
How long does custom timber framing last?
With proper treatment and high-quality stains, timber framing can last several decades, even in our fluctuating Ontario weather.
Can you add timber framing to an existing home?
Absolutely. Many of our clients in Elora, Fergus, and Elmira enhance their existing homes with timber frame entryways, porches, and accent gables.
What is the average size of timber beams for residential projects?
We commonly use 6", 8", and 10" beams depending on the scale and function—larger beams make a stronger visual impact and are often used in structural features.
Do I need a permit for timber framing in Ontario?
For structural timber elements, yes—permits are required. Decorative elements may not require one, but we always help guide you through the process.
