There's something about natural stone that no other building material quite matches. It has weight, texture, and permanence — the kind of character that makes a home feel like it belongs to the land it sits on. For homeowners in Elora, Fergus, and the surrounding Centre Wellington area, stonework isn't just a design choice. It's often a connection to the history of the region itself.
At LUMA Build Design, custom stonework is one of our most distinctive offerings. From stone veneer exteriors and retaining walls to heritage restoration and natural stone fireplaces, our team brings the craft and experience required to do it properly. This guide breaks down the types of stonework we build, why natural stone is worth the investment, and what you should know before starting a stonework project on your Ontario home.

Types of Stonework LUMA Builds
Stonework covers a wide range of applications — both structural and aesthetic. Here's an overview of the most common projects we take on across Fergus, Elora, and Centre Wellington.
Stone Veneer Exteriors
Stone veneer — whether natural thin-cut stone or high-quality manufactured stone — is one of the most impactful ways to transform a home's curb appeal. Applied to the front facade, foundation, entryway pillars, or full exterior, stone veneer creates warmth and texture that brick and vinyl simply can't replicate.
Natural stone veneer uses real stone cut to a thinner profile for application over a substrate. Manufactured stone uses concrete formed to mimic natural stone. Both require proper installation with weather barrier, metal lath, and scratch coat — shortcuts here lead to moisture infiltration and callbacks.
Retaining Walls
On properties with grade changes — common throughout Wellington County's varied terrain — stone retaining walls serve both function and beauty. They hold back soil, manage drainage, and create defined levels for landscaping, gardens, and outdoor living areas.
A properly engineered stone retaining wall is built with drainage aggregate behind the face, battered (angled) slightly into the slope, and constructed with interlocking courses that distribute load. Walls over a certain height require engineering sign-off under the Ontario Building Code.

Stone Steps and Walkways
Natural stone steps and flagstone walkways add permanence and elegance to a property's entry or garden. We work with locally sourced limestone, granite, and imported slate and flagstone to create walkways and steps that complement the landscape and stand up to Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles.
Stone Fireplaces and Interior Features
Interior stonework — fireplace surrounds, feature walls, kitchen islands clad in stone — brings the outside in. Natural stone around a fireplace is a focal point that instantly elevates any room. We work with our clients to source stone that suits the home's character, whether that's the rustic warmth of fieldstone or the clean lines of cut limestone.
Heritage Stone Restoration
Elora has one of the richest concentrations of 19th-century stone architecture in Ontario. Many homes and commercial buildings in the village — as well as older properties throughout Fergus and Wellington County — are built of locally quarried Credit Valley limestone. Restoring, repointing, and repairing these structures requires specialized knowledge of heritage masonry.
Improper repairs — using Portland cement mortar on soft historic limestone, for example — cause serious long-term damage. LUMA's team understands heritage masonry standards and works to preserve the original character of these buildings while ensuring structural integrity.
Natural Stone vs. Manufactured Stone: Which Is Right for Your Project?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends on the project, the look you're after, and your budget.
Natural stone is quarried directly and carries genuine variation in colour, texture, and character. No two stones are identical. It's heavier, typically more expensive, and requires skilled hands to lay properly. But it's the real thing — and it shows.
Manufactured stone (often called "stone veneer" in the retail market) is made from concrete poured into moulds taken from real stone. Quality varies enormously — premium products from manufacturers like Eldorado Stone are extremely convincing, while budget options can look artificial. Manufactured stone is lighter, easier to install, and more consistent in appearance, which can actually be a disadvantage if you want that natural variation.
For heritage properties in Elora or older homes in Fergus where authenticity matters, we lean toward natural stone or premium manufactured products that accurately capture the look of local limestone. For new construction and additions where budget is a primary factor, quality manufactured stone is a strong performer.
What Does Stonework Cost in Ontario?
Stonework is a skilled trade, and pricing reflects that. Here are general ranges for common projects in the Ontario market:
Stone veneer exterior (per square foot): $35–$75 installed, depending on stone type and complexity
Natural stone retaining wall (per square foot of face): $80–$150+, depending on height and engineering requirements
Flagstone walkway or patio: $25–$55 per square foot
Stone fireplace surround: $5,000–$35,000+, depending on scope and stone selection
Heritage repointing (per square foot): $15–$40 depending on condition and mortar matching required
All pricing varies on time of year plus any other factors
These are ranges, not estimates. Every stonework project is assessed individually — stone type, site access, existing conditions, and design complexity all affect final pricing.

Why Craftsmanship Matters More in Stonework Than Almost Anything Else
Stonework done poorly doesn't just look bad — it fails. Retaining walls that aren't properly drained will buckle. Veneer that isn't installed over the right substrate will allow moisture infiltration, causing staining, efflorescence, and eventual delamination. Heritage repointing with the wrong mortar mix can destroy the very stone it was meant to protect.
At LUMA Build Design, we've been doing this work in Centre Wellington for over 20 years. We understand the local climate, the stone types that perform well here, and the specific challenges of heritage masonry in Elora and Fergus. When we quote a stonework project, we do it right — proper drainage, proper substrate, proper mortar, proper technique. No shortcuts.
Pairing Stonework with Other LUMA Services
Some of our most satisfying projects combine stonework with other elements of a broader renovation. Stone retaining walls paired with new decking and outdoor living spaces. Stone veneer exteriors incorporated into a full home addition. Heritage restoration combined with energy-efficient window replacement. Timber framing and natural stone are a particularly powerful combination — the warmth of wood and the permanence of stone work together beautifully in the Ontario landscape.
If you're planning a broader renovation or new build in Fergus, Elora, or the surrounding area, we're happy to talk through how stonework can be integrated into your overall project.
